Best Season (March-May, October-November)
Late March to early April is peak cherry blossom season in Kyoto — the best time to visit. May brings fresh greenery to Arashiyama and lush Nara Park. October and November are prime autumn-leaf season with spectacular colours at Arashiyama, Tofuku-ji, Kiyomizu-dera and beyond.
Recommended (December-February)
Winter averages 5-10°C and is a bit chilly, but with fewer tourists you can sightsee at a relaxed pace. Enjoy winter-only delights like the Midosuji illumination, Arima Onsen and the Kobe Luminarie. Airfares and hotels are relatively cheap — great value for money.
Caution Needed (June Rainy Season / July-August Heat)
June is the rainy season with frequent rain. July and August can exceed 35°C, so stay hydrated and bring a hat or parasol. Indoor experiences (tea ceremony, ninja, crafts) are comfortable and highly recommended.

Travel Tips
Essential info on access, transport and costs
Getting to Osaka & Kansai
Kansai International Airport (KIX), Osaka International Airport (Itami) and Shin-Osaka Station (Shinkansen) are served by direct flights and trains from across Japan.
Getting Around Kansai
Train & Subway (Most Recommended)
Kansai has an exceptionally dense rail network. Combining JR, Hankyu, Hanshin, Keihan, Kintetsu and the subway covers almost every major sight. A single ICOCA (IC card) works across all operators. The JR Kansai Area Pass is also very popular with visitors.
City & Sightseeing Buses
In Kyoto, city buses cover the main sights — the Kyoto City Bus & Subway 1-Day Pass (¥1,100) is a great deal. In Osaka, the "Enjoy Eco Card" covering subway + city bus is convenient. Half-day and full-day sightseeing bus tours (Hato Bus, etc.) are great for first-timers too.
Taxi / Sightseeing Taxi
Flag-fall is ¥500-600. A taxi from KIX to central Osaka is about ¥14,000, versus ¥1,600 by limousine bus. A 3-hour sightseeing taxi is around ¥12,000-15,000 for one car and lets you tour Kyoto or Nara efficiently with a guide.
